Learn about the original Joyful Journeys Summit:

From January 11-13th, Agenda for Children hosted the Joyful Journeys Summit at the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans. For three days, approximately 100 educators from across the Greater New Orleans area explored and celebrated behavior, inclusion, and wellness in early childhood education.

On Thursday, January 11th, and Friday, January 12th, Tonya Byous, of Conscious Discipline, presented a 12 hour Introduction to Conscious Discipline workshop. The four sessions spread over two days challenged participants to critically examine their own teaching practices and beliefs about behavior while, also, leaving time for collaborative activities and social networking.

Saturday, January 13th was Wellness Day at the summit, where we were joined by community partners and experts as participants unpacked ways to care for themselves, embrace inclusivity, and strengthen relationships with families.

Ms. Byous returned to the stage for a keynote address, followed by a presentation by Taffy Morrison of Navigators for a Healthy Louisiana. Ms. Morrison also provided table resources to assist participants in mapping healthcare options, as well as other information, and materials. Experts from Well Ahead Louisiana, New Orleans Children’s Hospital ThriveKids, and Lakeshore Learning also joined us for this event.

Before lunch, a panel conversation, Inclusion is Possible and Benefits Everyone, was facilitated by Monica Supak of ThriveKids. During this hour, attendees heard from parents and experts in education support and health fields about the journey, challenges, and benefits of inclusive practices in childcare settings.

Following lunch and a king cake break, everyone strapped on their dancing shoes for Zydeco dance lessons with Brandon Broussard of Louisiana Dance Roots, accompanied by live music from Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots. As the summit came to a close, it was clear from the conversations in the room and smiles on everyone’s faces that the three-day experience had been a Joyful Journey, all around!
